Background Information
MYTRAK is the company that makes Curves Smart. They now also make the M2.
CurvesSmart attaches to each machine on the circuit. When you sign up for CurvesSmart, you get a card that tells each CurvesSmart station unique information about yourself. As you go around the circuit, you are specifically watching the range light and energy lights. Did you move the full extent in each direction? (Is your form good?) Did you move fast enough to make your CurvesSmart coach happy?
After your workout, you put your card into the CurvesSmart PC workstation. It will give you results of your session and help you to see where you need to pay more attention.
Curves Smart has its pros and its cons. Financially, it has a large up front investment for the club and on-going monthly costs for both the club and the members. The club has to raise its monthly rate for all new members after installing Curves Smart. Any existing members that choose to use Curves Smart also see an increase to their monthly rate.
It also changes the social dynamics in the club. People that don’t use Curves Smart find the equipment in the way. People that do use it use it get a crick in their neck craning to focus on it rather than their activity. And people that do not understand and have not mastered the basics of the workout routine find the results confusing and frustrating, especially as the equipment understands strength training vs cardio days.
Survey results showed little interest in Curves Smart at the Antioch club. The people that might be interested can achieve the same results through an advanced workout, as the increased resistance comes from working harder, not from the Curves Smart equipment itself. What all the survey participants REALLY wanted was extended hours. So we made the actually larger on-going investment to staff up and open all day long.
But even if we do add CurvesSmart in the future, it only tells us what you are doing in the club. We still have no idea what you do the rest of your day/week and how that is impacting your ability to meet your goals. Enter the M2 . . .
What Is It?
The M2 attaches to your waistband. It is small and discrete. No one even has to know it is there. The M2 works in conjunction with the MyTrak web site. You set goals for yourself, the software translates those goals into specifics for calories burned and heart healthy activity levels. Then it gives you feedback during the day to tell you how close you are to meeting those goals.
The first push of the M2’s button (daily gauge) shows you how close to meeting or exceeding your day’s target for calories to burn. At the start of the day, the entire circle will be red. As you move during the day, the M2 tracks your activity and lights up a larger and larger portion of the circle to let you know how close you are getting towards your goal. If you reach dinner time and still are not all green, you can synch it with your computer to find out how long you might have to do various activities to get yourself to green. It helps you meet your target each day.
The 2nd push of the M2’s button (health circle) shows you how you are doing on average to meet your heart healthy activity levels (heart), your calorie burn targets (energy), and your overall goals (health). Red indicates you need to focus and get activity level going towards that section. Yellow means you are nearing your goal and just a little push will get you there. Green means that goal is on target. Good for you!
The MYTRAK M2 website also has additional tools for your use, including the ability to track what you are eating and find out how many calories and nutrients you are taking in. Balancing calories burned against calories consumed allows you to manage your weight, whether you are trying to lose, maintain, or gain.
